urban slaves, as opposed to agricultural slaves, seem to have had
some chance at manumission; urban slaves at Athens were positively encouraged
to save for their freedom, and there are even records of slaves
operating businesses by themselves, with only a fixed payment to
their masters. Much of the wealth of Athenian
Democracy, however, came from its silver mines, which were worked by slaves under extremely
poor conditions, leading to their revolt in 413 BC. |
